YORKTOWN, Ind. –Two would-be thieves break into the Yorktown Food Mart early last Thursday morning and beat the store clerk with a baseball bat. While in hospital, he told Detective Brooke Barnard of the Yorktown Police Department that the culprits demanded JUUL capsules.

“He said they kept saying, ‘give me pods,'” Barnard said. “He explained by saying that they could mean like pods of tobacco or nicotine.”

Barnard said the entire incident happened within seconds. Employees at the store said they had served the Yorktown community around the clock for more than a decade and nothing like this had ever happened before.

“Everyone loves us and we love everyone,” said employee Ravinder Singh. “Nobody steals even a single candy from here. Anybody.”

Barnard said the employee injured in the attempted theft did not have insurance. So she started a GoFundMe to help her cover her medical costs.

The detective said the two people involved in the Yorktown incident likely arrested a third person and robbed a business in New Castle, according to surveillance footage.

“Reviewed video footage in which they both appeared to be wearing the same clothes, same gun, very similar shoes, stature,” Barnard said.

Barnard added that a gold SUV could also be involved in the Yorktown incident. If you have any information that could help the police make an arrest, call YPD at 765-759-4004.
