North Carolina Police arrested a Rocky Mount convenience store clerk on charges of beating a black man with what appeared in one video to be a wooden stick, the Telegram from Mont Rocheux reports.
A video claims to show Sobhi Hassan, 68, on strike, 56 Gregory Evans with a stick on December 22. Evans’ family said he was having a seizure and was incapacitated, as the clerk whipped and cursed Evans while telling him to leave the store.
Police charged Hassan with common assault, the Telegram reported, citing a press release from the Rocky Mount Police Department on December 28.

Evans’ family told WRAL he was hospitalized after the beating and was unable to move his body. Video of the incident on cellphones sparked outrage in the community and prompted calls to shut down Princess Market after years of disrespect.
“The video was horrible to watch, to see a person treated less than a human being,” said a resident of Rocky Mount Bronson williams said WRAL.
The demonstrators started a petition to close the store which had behaved in a “negative and discriminatory manner” towards them.
WRAL identified Elizabeth hedrick as the building owner who has rented the store for years at Princess Market. She was undecided about stopping the rental of the space.
During this time, Evans’ condition improved. His sister, Edith Cooper, said Monday (December 27) at a community meeting at Ebenezer Baptist Church that he was still undergoing testing for possible long-term injuries.
“He’s a bit slow and he still doesn’t have full body mobility right now,” Cooper said.
