Montclair store worker attacked in shoplifting: police

MONTCLAIR, NJ – An East Orange man has been charged with attacking a store clerk in Montclair during a shoplifting last week, police said Wednesday.

According to the Montclair Police Department, officers responded to The Wine Guys on Bloomfield Avenue on Saturday after receiving a report of a shoplifting. Passersby flagged down officers who responded, telling them a man was running in the backyards of Montague Place.

Witnesses told officers the man physically attacked a store employee before fleeing, police said.

Officers later located the suspect, a 28-year-old East Orange resident, hiding in the back yards of Montague Place. He was arrested and charged with theft, resisting arrest and aggravated assault, then transported to Essex County Correctional Center in Newark.

The victim was treated for facial injuries and abrasions to his right elbow, police said.
