Man charged with assaulting grocery store staff

The Timmins Police Department has charged a local person with robbery-related offenses following an incident Sunday, May 15 at a grocery store on Algonquin Boulevard in Timmins.

A suspect entered the store and [allegedly] attempted to walk away with a six pack of beers without paying for the item.

A staff member confronted the subject and attempted to retrieve the stolen item.

[It is alleged that] the suspect assaulted the store clerk, along with a second member of staff who intervened.

The suspect fled on foot and was located and arrested by Timmins police a short distance from the original scene.

The stolen merchandise was recovered.

Following the incident, Norman Williams, 54, of Timmins, was charged with:
• Theft under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
• Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
• two counts of assault contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
• two counts of breaching a probation order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Williams remains in police custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins to answer the charges against him.
