Man arrested for stabbing store clerk with katana being held without bail

EASTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WILX) – UPDATE: The man responsible for sending a store clerk to Ionia County Hospital was arraigned in district court this afternoon.

Jonathan Richard Wroten, a 36-year-old man from Ionia, is being held on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery and four counts of murder, according to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office. charge of resisting arrest. .

Police say the victim in the case has been released from hospital and is recovering at home. Police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time.

On Sunday, October 31, 2021 at 11:41 a.m., deputies from the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Department of Ionia and Public Safety and Michigan State Police, Lakeview Post, were sent for an armed robbery and felony assault that occurred at a convenience store at the 700 block of W. Lincoln Avenue in Easton Township.

Police say the scene investigation and review of store surveillance footage showed that at around 11:39 a.m., a man dressed in black and carrying a katana sword came to the store and attempted to use a rope to tie the door. from the outside. The suspect was confronted by a clerk from inside the store, a 56-year-old from Lyon, who opened the door to ask what was going on.

The suspect pulled his katana sword from a scabbard and stabbed the clerk through the doorway. The employee attempted to flee into the store and the suspect followed him and continued to lacerate and chop the employee’s head and neck causing serious injury. The suspect then pushed the clerk behind the counter where he robbed the cash register’s cigarette and cash store, before fleeing on foot.

Sheriff’s deputies and officers located the suspect north of the store in a farm field off Haynor Rd. After a confrontation with officers, the suspect surrendered after a short standoff and was taken into custody by officers on the scene.

The victim was transported by LIFE EMS with serious facial and head injuries to Spectrum Health Butterworth where he is currently in serious condition.

The suspect, who was injured in the incident, was treated at Sparrow Hospital in Ionia and then incarcerated in the Ionia County Jail for armed robbery and felony assault, additional charges are sought. to be reviewed by the Ionia County District Attorney. The suspect is a 36-year-old man from Ionia who will not be identified until arraignment.
